Peas- Health Benefits

Peas are scientifically known as Pisum sativum. They are commonly small spherical seed or the seed-pod. Botanically peas are called fruit because its seeds develop from ovary. Each pod contains several peas, which can be green or yellow. The name is also used to describe other edible seeds from the Fabaceae family such as the pigeon pea, the cowpea and the seeds from several species of Lathyrus.

They belongs to leguminosae family, which consists of plants that produce pods with seeds inside. Lentils, chickpeas, beans and peanuts are also legumes. However, green peas are commonly cooked and sold as a vegetable. You can buy them in frozen, fresh or canned varieties.

Green peas are a popular vegetable. They are very nutritious and also contain fiber and antioxidants.
